The tooth implants themselves are tiny titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone wherever teeth are missing. These metal anchors—which serve tooth root substitutes—bond with the titanium to create a strong foundation for artificial teeth.
Small posts that protrude through the gums are then attached to the implant. The artificial teeth will then be attached to these posts.
For many patients, getting dental implants involves two surgical procedures. The first is the placement of the implants within the jawbone. It takes about three to six months for the implants and the gums to bond, during which time patients typically wear temporary dentures while their dentist forms the replacement teeth.
After the implants have bonded to the bone, Dr. Graffeo or Dr. Linsky will uncover the implants and attach the posts that act as anchors for the artificial teeth. When the teeth are placed, the posts are not visible.
Although every patient is different, the entire process generally takes approximately six to eight months, and most patients experience minimal disruption in their daily lives.
