Generally, there is not much space in the mouth for wisdom teeth, causing them to grow in sideways or never fully emerge. This is known as impaction, and can cause a range of issues from infection and cysts to damage to other teeth.
The longer the teeth are left in, the deeper the roots get—which can cause further complication later down the line.
In most cases, the removal of wisdom teeth is performed under local anesthesia, laughing gas (nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia) or general anesthesia. These options will be discussed with you before the procedure is performed.
After the anesthesia kicks in and the teeth are removed, the gum is sutured. To help control bleeding, gauze will be placed in your mouth. You will rest under our supervision in the office until you are ready to be taken home.
Upon discharge, your postoperative kit will include postoperative instructions, a prescription for pain medication, antibiotics, and a follow-up appointment in one week for suture removal.
For those who are unsure whether they need their wisdom teeth removed, Dr. Graffeo and Dr. Linsky can perform an oral examination and take x-rays of the mouth to detect present or future problems.
